in the garden march 2011

brussel sprouts: these grow along the inner stalk. they are fantastic roasted or steamed then fried. never boiled.

fennel sits on top of the earth. i like to roast mine and eat it with salt and pepper.

this is a type of cauliflower called romanesco. it’s florets are fractal shaped. hands down best when roasted till it has browned edges. it also has a sweet taste when fresh. and when i say fresh, i mean in season or from the garden. store cauliflower that has sat for awhile has a bitter bite to it.

happy hour

today’s tasty beverage is fresh squeezed orange juice from my tree, vodka, a splash of vanilla extract, and a few mint leaves.

i almost went with sage, but i thought i would go more classic. that, and i have twice as much mint as sage, and sage is tastier friend in butter than swimming in alcohol.

this screwdriver pairs well with darning sweaters and mending torn pockets.

galoshes

i’ve found that the fashion industry now refers to rubber boots as “rain boots” instead of galoshes.

either way, i’ve finally found my pair.

you may wonder why i’d need them in arizona, but i do garden a significant amount.

and it gets pretty muddy out there.

the best part about this pair is that they were on sale, then there was a store wide 40% off sale as well.

and they are even lined on the inside.

perfect.

another lesson in patience for me.

green building

I took a little photowalk in the Silverlake neighborhood when I stayed in Los Angeles.  On the outside facade of a salon was a wall covered in a permeable fabric.  The fabric was cut and formed pockets in which were inserted tiny plants.  It looked amazing! I wanted to do this to my house.

I spent an extended weekend last month in Los Angeles with my good friends Sean and Bekah.  A bit of a last hurrah before they welcome their beautiful baby into this world and I don’t have a spare room to sleep in anymore.  They always show me a great time-they are the type of host who has fun activities planned-interesting places to visit both intellectual and low brow.  Good times had by all.

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Huntington Library.  I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical just by the name.  I do like libraries, but it was a vacation after all.  But I was more than surprised.  And they pretty much had to drag me away from the place when it was time to leave.  It is basically a giant fun-land for people who like art, books, and plants.  I could have spent days wandering around the property.

This was an entire collection of each edition of The Origin of Species.
